Despite the current policy headwinds in the U.S., the Energy Information Agency of the country reveals that large-scale solar PV projects are on course to bring online a whopping 32 gigawatts of electricity over the coming 12 months.
The report, which was published on November 10, indicates that this huge amount of electricity is expected to become available in the period covering November this year to September 2026. Of this capacity, 5GW cover projects that could have already come online but they experienced delays during the final stages of their construction or during their testing phase.
To allay concerns regarding the projected 32GW failing to be commissioned as expected, the report points out that delays may not be a major concern since such incidents typically increase timelines by just 1-2 months. Projects impacted by such delays have also dwindled to just 20%, down from 25% in Q3 2024. For this reason, nearly all the expected capacity will be added within the expected duration, the EIA says.
Additionally, cancellations of solar projects only cover 1% of projects on a monthly basis, so the historical data almost provides assurance that the projects scheduled for completion will actually be completed and added to grids.
The decreasing rate of delayed projects suggests that developers continue to fine-tune their construction techniques and testing protocols to eliminate delays.
Despite the delays experienced last year, the solar energy has continued to break the annual records it keeps setting. For example, the EIA document shows that 2024’s solar additions totaled 31GW, which was a new record that increased utility-scale PV generation capacity by 34%.
The solid performance of the solar industry makes it even more baffling that the administration in Washington is hostile to this renewable energy that can provide a quick solution to the national energy emergency declared by President Trump at a time when demand is shooting through the roof powered by rapid growth in data centers, AI and manufacturing. The roadblocks from the political arena are projected to kill off about 73 solar projects that would have availed 116GW of extra electricity by 2030.
At a time when all hands should be on deck to address the energy emergency, solar has been denied the policy support it needs and entities like Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) have been left on their own as they strive to bring this affordable and accessible form of energy to homes and businesses around the country.
