As Trump campaigned to win office for this term that he is currently serving, Silicon Valley was fully behind him because he vowed to let the tech industry innovate freely without the “cumbersome” regulatory approach that Biden’s administration had started on. However, recent developments have sent the industry reeling as Trump’s constantly changing positions on AI have left the industry worried about the future.
The first year of Trump’s current administration saw him work to prevent states from enacting their own regulations governing the AI industry, and the series of executive orders he signed to this effect made the tech industry comfortable that the White House was friendly to their interests.
However, as more powerful AI models have been developed by tech labs, Trump has pivoted to seeking strict regulation of the industry for fear that criminal elements could leverage those powerful technologies to compromise national security interests. The order given to Anthropic to restrict access to its Mythos and Fable models caught the tech industry by surprise.
The tech industry is painfully learning that in true Trump style, positions can swing suddenly in opposite directions, and Silicon Valley is increasingly worried about what the future holds. Some have gone as far as wishing for the style of regulation that Biden had proposed, because such a system would give the industry a clear policy direction that could guide their innovations and future plans.
The current approach through which orders are just given, almost based on what vibes the president is having at a given moment, has left the industry confused as to what to expect and how to channel their R&D efforts since they don’t know what will be regarded as acceptable and what will attract the heavy hand of the administration.
A case in point, again, is Anthropic. The firm was ordered to pull out of circulation its Mythos and Fable 5 models and a short while later the administration partially reversed its ban. OpenAI has also faced White House restrictions on its advanced GPT-5 model.
There is no clarity on what is or isn’t acceptable, and labs are unsure how to proceed. Industry actors are hesitant to voice their concerns strongly for fear of attracting a disproportionate reaction from the White House, yet they would like to engage the government so that the policy direction is known rather than continuing with the current approach in which new innovations are being given the nod or restricted on an ad hoc basis.
The confusion and opacity isn’t only affecting AI labs. Other sector players like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE: TSM) could also be equally concerned because their products are inevitably impacted when labs are unsure how to proceed with their work.
