The past few weeks have been characterized by major tech firms like Meta, OpenAI and Anthropic revealing that their AI agents or models went rogue and hacked into other companies’ systems while those tools were being tested. These incidents have demonstrated how capable AI can be in identifying and exploiting existing vulnerabilities in companies’ systems. As a result, there has been a spike in cybersecurity spending.
Recent investment trends in AI show that data centers and advanced chips have claimed most of the capex, and now cybersecurity appears poised to become the next big thing in the AI boom.
Blackpanda’s Gene Yu explains that the very capabilities that allow artificial intelligence models to identify when a hacking event has taken place are the same capabilities that also allow the technology to undertake hacking tasks. It is therefore a matter of who is giving the tool instructions. If it is a bad actor, breaches will occur. If it is a good actor, incidents could be averted.
Yu added that while recent incidents suggest AI has increased the number of cybersecurity incidents, this may in reality not be the case. Instead, the technology is proving to be a “force multiplier” that drastically reduces the time needed to sniff out weaknesses in systems and then exploit them.
This reality is causing alarm, and spending on cybersecurity is projected to keep rising. In 2026 alone, this spending is forecast to grow 12.5% and reach $240bn.
Analysts say firms are going to be compelled to increase their expenditure on cybersecurity in order to protect themselves against this growing risk of AI-powered attacks. Many experts say such spending on cybersecurity is likely to happen even as companies invest in incorporating AI into their systems, rather than shifting funding from AI to cybersecurity.
The healthcare and finance sectors are bound to claim a large share of the spending on cybersecurity since these sectors are pivotal to economies around the world and are disproportionately targeted by hackers.
Experts say cybersecurity-focused firms are likely to be the biggest beneficiaries of this increased spending on cybersecurity because their specialized nature gives them an edge in quickly coming up with innovative solutions that serve the market. AI hyperscalers are also likely to benefit since they can develop solutions to the threats created by their AI models. Speed to market will be the deciding factor, and cybersecurity pure plays may have the advantage here.
For major tech firms like Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA), the rise in cybersecurity spending could present yet another opportunity to capitalize on through the chips and solutions they specialize in.
