Why Elon Musk Has Set His Sights on Making AI Chips

Elon Musk announced project Terafab, a project that will see him build a manufacturing plant that will produce AI chips on a massive scale. Terafab is currently backed by Tesla, xAI, and SpaceX. All are companies owned by the tech billionaire. So, why would Musk set his sights on making chips and yet other firms have mastered the process to an art?

For starters, Musk is painfully aware of how serious chip shortages are. Demand is so high that leading companies like Nvidia, TSMC and Micron are finding it hard to ramp up production quickly enough. With Terafab, Musk wants to break free from having to scramble for the inadequate supply of chips on the market.

Musk has also expressed his frustration at how long it currently takes to move from designing a chip to actually deploying it. At the moment, this cycle takes about two years or thereabouts. Musk wants to collapse that time, and his fully integrated facility will handle everything from designing the chips to using them in his companies. In this way, it will be easier to iterate models as the need arises, instead of spending a lot of time undertaking back-and-forth communications with external fabricators.

Another reason pushing Musk to venture into chip manufacturing is the need to ensure supply chain security for his tech companies. Currently, the AI industry is dependent on Nvidia, TSMC and a few other companies for its semiconductor needs. This creates significant supply chain vulnerabilities, especially with the ongoing geopolitical turmoil.

Elon Musk wants to set up his own integrated chip manufacturing facility so that his businesses can have an independent source of the semiconductors they need, at the volumes they need, and exactly when they need them.

It is also noteworthy that the projected demand for chips within Musk’s companies makes a strong case for in-house manufacturing of these components. For example, if the humanoid robot Optimus starts being churned out in the millions of units each year, the chips that go into producing those robots are mind-boggling in number. Similarly, the self-driving cars Tesla is working on also require lots of chips, and Musk is looking to produce them internally.

Musk has been known to take on seemingly impossible projects and succeed massively, the way he did with electric cars. It remains to be seen whether he will enter partnerships with other leading tech firms like Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) in this latest challenge that he has embarked on.
