Anthropic Says the US Has Lifted the Ban on its Latest AI Tools

Anthropic has released a statement revealing that the United States government has lifted an export ban that it had placed on the company’s latest pair of advanced AI tools. This change of heart comes barely weeks after the unprecedented ban was imposed on June 12.

The administration in Washington had been concerned that Mythos 5 and Fable 5 could be exploited by hackers with intentions to compromise the national security interests of the U.S.

Through a letter authored by the U.S. Commerce Department, the government informed Anthropic that it could now make the models available to the public around the world. The letter indicates that the company had agreed to take proactive steps to detect and then address any security risks that emerge in its technology.

Howard Lutnick, the Commerce Secretary, also indicated that Anthropic had undertaken to collaborate with the government before it releases any other future AI models and that it would notify the government if the firm detects any malicious activities undertaken using its technology.

Both Fable and Mythos are built using Anthropic’s Claude platform, just as other tech giants like OpenAI leverages its ChatGPT platform to develop several models, and Google uses the Gemini platform to develop different AI models. The new models from Anthropic are designed for different end-user markets.

Fable 5 is intended for use by the consumer market. It relies on deep reasoning to perform complex tasks without the input of a human. Mythos 5 is designed to address the needs of businesses and cybersecurity professionals. It is intended to identify any weaknesses present in computer code and to exploit those weaknesses.

Anthropic released the two models on June 9, only to be ordered to pull them from circulation on June 12.

The company had complained that the United States government hadn’t indicated the specific concerns that it had about the two models but went ahead to issue an order to Anthropic to suspend the models’ availability globally.

At the time, Anthropic speculated that the federal administration had become aware of the possibility of hackers “jail-breaking” the Fable 5 model in an attempt to gain access to features blocked to public access in the design of the technology.

Now that the government has written to the company letting it know that the models can be released globally, Anthropic says it has started restoring public access today (Wednesday). Major tech companies like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) will continue to monitor how the government concretizes its efforts to regulate AI while allowing the industry to innovate.
