Apple Rejects Musk’s Claims of Bias Against its App Store

Apple has rejected the claims of bias against its app store by Elon Musk. Musk claimed that the store subverts fair competition and in response, Apple asserted that its app store is designed to be fair and free from bias.

Musk, the owner of social media platform X, has threatened that he may resort to the courts of law to challenge Apple’s efforts to render it impossible for other apps to compete with those of OpenAI on the Apple App Store. Musk went as far as referring to Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, as a liar after the latter had said Musk used X for the benefit of his companies and for his own personal benefit.

This latest spat is the most recent in a long-running feud between these two billionaires that now compete against each other yet they co-founded OpenAI back in 2015. Musk exited OpenAI and now the two men are engaged in competition with one another.

In 2024, Apple entered a partnership with OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Despite this partnership, there isn’t any indication that Apple favors any apps over others. In fact, a number of competitor apps, such as Perplexity and DeepSeek, have risen to the top of the charts on the App Store even when the partnership between ChatGPT and Apple has been in force.

Apple released a statement after Musk’s claims. In that statement, Apple asserted that experts leverage objective criteria to curate app lists, make algorithmic recommendations and formulate charts reflecting the performance or utility of different apps.

Shortly after the release of that statement, Musk took to X to query why Apple hasn’t promoted Grok or X despite these two apps having global reach. To him, these ought to be featured on the list of “Must-Have” apps on the App Store. Musk further elaborated that Grok ranks at Number 5 among all the applications around the world while X was the Number One news app globally. It isn’t clear whether these rankings that Musk cites are his own or they can be independently verified.

It should be noted that this latest bout in these two’s feud marks another chapter in their decade-old disagreement. Musk says Altman diverted from the original motivation for establishing OpenAI, which was to benefit humanity by developing AGI or general artificial intelligence. The firm was intended to be a nonprofit, and its technology was to be open-source. However, a for-profit division was created by the company in 2019. Musk says this went counter to the original principles of the enterprise.

In 2024, Musk went to court to challenge this turn in the direction of the company but later dropped this lawsuit in 2025. OpenAI says Musk is driven by a personal agenda and not an interest in protecting the original mission of OpenAI.

As the race for dominance heats up among the tech giants, such as Apple, Microsoft Inc. (NASDAQ: MSFT), Meta Platforms Inc., and others in the U.S., many more points of contention are likely to arise between their respective CEOs.
