On Friday, China launched an experimental reusable spacecraft in a mission that was shrouded in secrecy like the previous three such launches. Announcements about this mission were reported by Xinhua, a state-run media organization.
According to the news release, the spacecraft is intended to undertake technological verification on the concept of reusable spacecraft and provide technical support for the peaceful utilization of space. This statement mirrors previous statements that were issued when earlier missions were launched. China usually releases minimal information about its space missions, and this recent mission is no different.
Catalog tracking undertaken by the United States Space Force will eventually provide details about the orbit of this spaceplane launched by China.
When that information becomes available, it is bound to attract plenty of attention, especially with regard to the likelihood of follow-up missions by China. Interest will also be directed towards the subsatellites as well as RPOs (Rendezvous & Proximity Operations) associated with the launch.
It has been 519 days since China launched a similar mission. The prior missions entailed releasing a small object or satellite into space. The last two missions seemed to have had an added element of RPOs with the objects that had been released into orbit.
The Asian country hasn’t released any information or imagery regarding its reusable spacecraft missions although the limited information available suggests that this latest mission involved a payload weighing about eight tons. This spacecraft could be aimed at working in conjunction with a first stage suborbital reusable craft. This craft leverages vertical takeoff plus horizontal landing capabilities. It was debuted in 2021. The following year another similar mission was conducted in August.
The space mission ties in with China’s efforts to boost its access and utilization of space, as well as the country’s ambitions to develop reusable solutions for outer space. In line with these plans, the country has conducted tests of vertical landing and vertical takeoff craft for use in space.
The launch conducted on Friday marked the ninth such attempt this year that included two failed launches.
The space race is heating up between China and the U.S. together with their different allies. In the U.S., this effort is largely spearheaded by NASA together with private firms like SpaceX owned by billionaire Elon Musk, who also owns Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) that was a trailblazer in the electric vehicle field. The coming years are likely to yield major developments in space travel as more billions of dollars are poured into space missions by different governments and companies.
