Could AI Soon Become a Reliable Medical Diagnostic Tool?

AI has recorded undeniable positive strides in medical diagnosis. The technology has been documented to be accurate at reading X-rays, and cancer screening programs are increasingly leveraging AI. Trials have also shown that the technology can equal and sometimes surpass doctors in telehealth applications. However, many challenges still hound AI use in healthcare, such as issues of accountability, bias, lack of transparency and data privacy concerns. Could AI soon claim a prominent role in medical diagnostics as a reliable tool?

In the U.S., the market for AI diagnostic systems is projected to grow from approximately $790m this year to at least $4.3bn by 2034. Projections indicate that radiology is likely to claim the largest share of this market.

At the moment, many hospitals in America, as well as smaller medical facilities like urgent care centers and private doctors’ practices are already embracing AI. This shows that the technology holds promise, though many concerns abound regarding its widespread use.

For starters, an AI model is only as good as its training. Many models have recorded commendable success in clinical trials at major hospitals, only to perform dismally when used in different settings. This means that the models have to be trained on an ongoing basis using larger datasets so that their findings can pass the accuracy and reliability test.

While such large datasets can be accessed, concerns exist regarding how private data will be protected and prevented from illicit use in cross-border situations. The regulation of AI in healthcare is still in its infancy and evolving, so these oversight issues could hold back how quickly healthcare AI systems are scaled and gain widespread acceptance by the public.

More questions also exist on matters of accountability. Who should be held responsible when an AI diagnostic tool makes a mistake; is it the doctor who signed off on the diagnosis, is it the developer of the AI system, is it the hospital? Different jurisdictions are grappling with these questions and legal frameworks are yet to pronounce themselves on these issues as the debate rages on.

What is undeniable is that AI provides huge benefits like speed and scale, with the potential to cut healthcare costs in cases where medical professionals are in short supply. The technology can also reduce workloads, giving personnel more time to fully engage with their patients. As companies like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) continue their efforts to develop AI solutions and wearables with diagnostic use-cases, the reach of AI in the medical field is only bound to grow.
