As more data centers are being planned or constructed across the United States, many states are weighing the option of setting up nuclear energy plants in order to meet the growing demand for power to run these data centers.
This option could be a welcome idea to many residents who are concerned about the rising electricity bills they face, but the reality is far from clear. Residents in many states could end up footing the bills of setting up these nuclear plants.
A number of states, such as New York, Minnesota and New Jersey are weighing the possibility of having nuclear plants set up within their jurisdictions to address the surging demand for electricity due to increasing electrification and data center proliferation. Currently, New Jersey and Minnesota are discussing draft legislation to set up these plants.
Governor Kathy Hochul of New York is a step ahead. Last year, the state approved plans to construct a nuclear energy plant. The White House is also fully behind efforts to establish nuclear energy facilities around the country. The president wants at least 10 nuclear energy plants to be constructed over the coming few years.
However, constructing nuclear energy reactors is very expensive. Recently, Georgia constructed a pair of these facilities at a total cost of $35 billion for both plants, and this figure more than doubled what had originally been budgeted for the projects.
Additionally, the construction took an extra seven years beyond the timeline that had been envisaged for their establishment. This Georgia experience suggests that it could take a very long time for nuclear facilities to come online and provide the vast amounts of energy needed by data centers.
Critics like Greg Jaczko say looking to nuclear plants is the most costly way to add energy to the grid. He added that energy bills are skyrocketing in communities due to the added pressure to expand energy infrastructure to supply nearby data centers. He made these remarks while addressing a press conference in support of draft legislation seeking to impose a temporary moratorium on the use of taxpayer money to fund the construction of a nuclear reactor in New York.
Jaczko asserts that nuclear facilities are very costly and can’t be deployed quickly enough to meet the energy needs of data centers. Given that at least 50% of all Americans use AI tools each week, it is clear that data centers are needed, but how to provide the electricity they need is still a subject of heated debate. AI hyperscalers like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) must be wondering how this debate will ever be resolved.
