Factors That Influence the Lifespan of Your Residential Solar Battery

A survey conducted recently by SunPower found that approximately 40% of the respondents in America have worries regarding electricity outages. Survey participants who expressed interest in residential solar system overwhelmingly (70%) expressed a desire to incorporate solar batteries within any solar system they purchased.

With solar installation ticking upwards across the country over recent years, many consumers are interested in knowing how long energy storage batteries can last when used at home. We explore some of the factors that could contribute to the longevity of these batteries.

The warranty provided by the battery manufacturer provides the first clue about how long you can expect that battery to last. Most warranties run for about a decade. This suggests that your battery could deliver expected performance for that timeframe. However, most batteries generally last between five and fifteen years, so you can expect to need a replacement during the service period of your solar panels, which normally spans 25-30 years.

Trickle charge and overcharge can shorten battery life. Trickle charge refers to a battery that has reached 100% charge and loses some charge, and then is charged to full again. When this is repeated often enough, the battery starts losing its capacity. On the other hand, overcharge refers to a battery continuing to receive current even after it has fully charged. Overheating can result, and that degrades the battery. Battery fires can also result when the battery is overheated.

High ambient temperatures also shorten battery life, which is why manufacturers often recommend installing these units in cool, well-ventilated locations. You can therefore expect a battery installed in a hotter climate to have a shorter lifespan than a similar one installed in a cooler climate.

Deep discharging also reduces battery life. This refers to using up all the charge on the battery before charging it again. When this happens frequently, the battery loses its capacity at a faster rate and it may not last for as long as the manufacturer designed it to last. It helps when you start out with a battery sourced from a reputable manufacturer with a solid record of producing batteries of high quality.

As you can see from the discussion above, solar battery lifespan largely depends on the specific conditions and ways under which it is used. To get maximum longevity from your residential battery system, it is advisable to implement the specific installation, maintenance and usage recommendations provided by the manufacturer, such as Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA).
