On Friday, Google unveiled Audio Overviews, a feature that is powered by its generative artificial intelligence tool Gemini AI. Audio Overviews gives users conversational summaries of the searches that they conduct, thereby providing a hands-free method through which they can get information.
Audio Overviews also has web pages integrated into the audio summaries so that a user can delve deeper into any topic they are interested in. Audio Overviews is yet another step that the tech giant has taken to deepen its integration of artificial intelligence within the search function.
Google looks determined to ramp up its competition with OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT. The chatbot from OpenAI has a search engine integrated within its features.
Google says its Audio Overviews can quickly use conversational language to sum up any query results arising from the input a user has provided to the search engine. This, Google says, allows individuals to access information regardless of whether they are currently performing another task or they prefer to consume information in an audio format.
Google adds that Audio Overviews provides web pages on the search results page. Those pages allow a user to decide whether to delve deeper into a given subject or be content with the audio summary provided.
While Google is currently ramping up its efforts to integrate gen-AI in its online search tools, there are concerns that the increasing use of AI could jeopardize the business model of the company which heavily relies on adverts. However, the firm is pressing ahead with the integration.
This could be because the race to dominate the AI race in the online search marketplace could be superseding other interests at the moment. It may therefore be a case of “race to the top and fix the business model later.”
The Audio Overviews feature comes in the wake of the AI Overviews feature introduced approximately a year ago to display AI-generated summaries of queries made by users. The summaries are displayed at the top of the search results page, right above the different web pages providing information relevant to the query that a user has made.
Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Google, revealed that AI Overviews now has in excess of 1.5 billion users based in various countries around the globe.
As tech firms race to outcompete each other in the use of AI in their products and solutions, all eyes will be on leading brands like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) to see how quickly they establish themselves as leaders in this field.
