Insufficient Staffing is Hampering Data Center Operations

As data center construction experiences explosive growth, it is becoming clearer that the specialized talent needed to work at these data centers isn’t growing at the same pace. Insufficient staffing at data centers results in a number of challenges as we explore below.

One immediate effect of insufficient staffing at data centers is reduced operational efficiency. When people with the needed specialized skills are unavailable to work at data centers, it becomes harder to manage the workloads running on hybrid infrastructures. The result is that the data center will be unable to optimize its operations since the existing staff is strained by the heavy workloads.

As the available workers are overloaded due to insufficient staffing, the likelihood of human error significantly increases. An employee who is overworked is more likely to make a mistake that has serious consequences, such as data loss or even taking the data center offline. Uptime Institute, a consulting and research organization based in New York, says about 70% of issues at data centers are linked to human error.

Furthermore, insufficient staffing also impacts facility maintenance. Needed preventive maintenance activities could be delayed and when components require replacement, such critical replacement may not happen in a timely manner. It will also be harder to monitor data center operations remotely if the facility is understaffed. As a result, when there is an incident compromising data center operation, it may take longer for the necessary interventions to be undertaken.

Insufficient staffing can also make the challenge of operational complexity worse than it actually is. Machine learning and AI workloads have made operating data centers more complex. When a given data center is insufficiently staffed, it becomes harder to manage the available workloads since specialized competence is needed for such tasks.

Recruitment and training become harder when a data center is understaffed. This is because the current staff tends to be overworked and may not be in position to conduct the necessary outreach to identify needed talent. Even if that talent is identified, new recruits need to be onboarded systematically so that they understand the specific systems at a given data center. Again, overworked staff will be unlikely to onboard new hires effectively, and that could result in performance issues down the road.

For tech giants like Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) that have had a data center incident that they linked to understaffing, it is imperative to continually review staffing policies and practices so that the risks linked to understaffing can be averted.
