A hashtag #GazaIsStarving has taken social media by storm around the world as many users post disturbing images and videos showing how Israel’s restrictions on aid reaching starving Palestinians have worsened the humanitarian crisis in the enclave.
Yesterday (Sunday), X had at least 227,000 posts having that hashtag in Arabic a short while after the hashtag was trending the most on the platform that was formerly known as Twitter before it was acquired by Elon Musk and renamed X. Instagram has recently had more than 5,000 posts featuring that hashtag.
Today’s wars aren’t only conducted on the battlefield. The internet is proving to be another key front in waging wars, and this particular hashtag is making Israel come under intense pressure as the world sees in real time what the Israel military operation in Gaza is doing to Palestinians struggling to access food at the limited aid centers permitted by Israeli forces.
In some posts having the GazaIsStarving hashtag, Israeli forces are shown pepper-spraying starving Palestinians who are scrambling to access food supplies at distribution centers. Other posts show severely malnourished kids while others show people fleeing food distribution centers as Israeli bulldozers and tanks move through those aid centers. Records indicate that at least 900 Palestinians have so far been killed from May this year in the vicinity of food distribution centers operated by GHP, an aid agency having the backing of the U.S. and Israel.
So, where does this hashtag trace its roots? Almost 2 years ago, Chassan A. Sittah, a Palestinian surgeon, posted on social media back in October 2023 that people had started going hungry in Gaza. His post is credited by many for inspiring the #GazaIsStarving hashtag that has since exploded in popularity. The hashtag has become a rallying cry around the world to draw attention to the tragic loss of life within the enclave as a result of the onslaught of Israeli forces.
Every day, dozens of Palestinians who are starving are killed by Israeli forces. Social media users are using the hashtag to express their outrage against these needless deaths.
It is noteworthy that this hashtag gained momentum at a time when aid agencies and the UN issued urgent warnings that Israel’s blockade against medicines and food entering Gaza was leading to civilians in Palestine facing starvation.
This hashtag shows how social media is helping to spread awareness about the humanitarian crisis playing out in Gaza as the armed conflict drags on without an end in sight despite different attempts to broker a ceasefire between the warring parties. The social media platforms owned by tech giants like Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) are likely to continue highlighting the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza.
