Israel Uses AI to Upgrade its Public Alert System

Civil defense authorities in Israel have been working to improve the alert system depended upon to get people into shelters before incoming projectiles hit. AI is playing a key role in improving that alert system.

During the June 2025 war with Iran that lasted 12 days, any incoming missile led the city-wide alert system to sound and send residents scampering for cover. This could happen multiple times each day, and this would be very stressful for the people. Authorities have been working to improve the alert system so that only those at risk during a particular attack can be notified to rush into the bomb shelters.

AI is being tapped to make precise predictions of the specific area that could be impacted by an incoming missile. That prediction helps in refining which people should be alerted using the public alert system so that others that are in areas least likely to be impacted can continue with a degree of normal life.

AI is being used to analyze every missile or rocket attack to get data on the trajectory of travel, the weather conditions during the time of the attack, the radar signature of the missile, the launch angles, the timing of each attack, and so much more. All this data is analyzed and fused to provide real-time insights that the civil defense then uses to trigger alerts.

The use of AI has transformed the alert system tremendously. For example, back in 2006 during a conflict with Hezbollah, the entire country was segmented into 25 zones by the alert system. Today, these zones now exceed 1,700.

These numbers may not immediately reveal what such a transformation means, but when you consider that each city is now divided into several alert zones, you can begin to see how the areas that can be notified about an incoming missile narrow down to the expected target areas only. Millions of city residents no longer have to be sent to shelters due to incoming missiles that aren’t expected to land in their areas.

AI has also revolutionized how Israel uses smartphones in its efforts to keep residents informed about attacks. The government is now using an app to send warnings and other public safety information directly to individual residents. The system geo-locates individual phones so that only those in a zone of interest receive the specific alert intended for them.

To many residents, these improvements have eased life to some extent, although the stress associated with living under the constant threat of attack remains. For companies like Nvidia Corp.
