The First Lady of the U.S., Melania Trump, invited school kids from kindergarten up to grade 12 to take part in a contest sponsored by the government. The competition is designed to have the kids work together on AI projects aimed at addressing community issues. This call was made on Tuesday as Melania Trump launched this contest.
In a video message launching this Presidential AI Challenge, the First Lady pointed out that she created an audio book using AI and was a champion of online safety in her efforts to see the Take It Down Bill passed by Congress. She added that she has firsthand experience of how promising AI technology is and called on kids to rise up to challenge and use AI for the good of their communities.
She called on all kids within the school grades indicated to leverage their imagination and manifest America’s spirit of innovation in the projects they come up with.
The kids are advised to form groups and make use of AI tools or methods as a way of addressing challenges in communities. Michael Kratsios, who is the director of the science & technology office at the White House, said during a television interview that there were endless possibilities regarding the projects that the children could come up with, and the objective is to foster collaboration among the kids given that when they become adults, it is inevitable that they will use AI in many spheres of life.
Kratsios added that the administration wants the youth in America not only plugged in but also using AI tools in productive ways.
Registration for the contest opened on Tuesday and kids are required to be sponsored by a teacher or adult mentor in order to have their team qualify to take part. Contestants have up to December’s end to submit their projects. In spring, competitions will take place at regional level and national winners will be hosted to an event at the White House.
Trump signed an executive order that mandated such a contest to take place with an aim of boosting American youth education on AI.
This contest and other measures that the administration is taking highlight how big a priority AI leadership is for the United States. Tech firms like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and their U.S. rivals are also engaged in their own race for global dominance at a time when different countries, especially China, are also doing everything they can to claim global AI dominance.
