During a recent interview with the BBC, Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, revealed that he was unhappy with the current situation in which consumer products like washing machines and milk were more regulated than a powerful technology like AI.
He emphasized that the world needed to have safety rules providing oversight of the AI industry, and those rules or laws needed to have provisions compelling AI companies to inform any victim once an AI system goes rogue and accesses a system or website it wasn’t authorized to access.
Smith says those global safeguards should also clearly spell out when it is necessary for independent evaluators to assess a system and approve its release before a new AI model or system is publicly available.
The Microsoft president’s views are in sharp contrast to what President Trump prefers. The president has repeatedly said that any rules imposed on AI development would hamstring AI labs and allow rivals like China to pull ahead in the race for AI dominance. To him, any country that wins the AI race has won in everything.
In a recent meeting with leading tech chiefs, Trump presided over the signing of a non-binding pledge for AI companies to regulate themselves. Critics were livid with this self-policing approach, but Trump appears unbothered by the growing calls to put in place meaningful regulations for an industry that has already started manifesting its risks.
Several companies, as well as Australian government websites, have suffered hacks conducted by AI tools that went rogue. In the Australian case, the government was alerted about the incident in a way that can best be described as casual. OpenAI sent its notification to a public-facing mail address, and it took nearly a week before the appropriate government official saw the message.
The AI lab apologized to the Australian government, but was this enough? Could they have handled the situation better? These questions can be best answered when there are clearly defined regulations that hold tech companies accountable for what their systems do.
By contrasting the regulatory approach for everyday items like milk versus a technology like AI that could, by many accounts, threaten humanity, Brad Smith is adding his voice to others who have called for urgent efforts to oversee AI development in a meaningful way so that its harms are kept in check while its benefits are enjoyed by all.
It remains to be seen what top executives at firms like Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) think about Smith’s views on AI regulation.
