A new body has been formed to bring together players in the manufacturing, recycling and deployment of battery energy storage solutions around the world. The body will also advocate for the development of new technology, such as inverters for grid-scale use. This new body is dubbed the Global Solar Council.
The GSC, which is based on Washington, D.C., was unveiled on Tuesday this week as New York marked its Climate Week and as the UN General Assembly had its 80th edition taking place in New York.
The nonprofit says it wants different countries around the world to formulate and implement battery energy storage strategies and also incorporate batteries when making plans for their energy systems. They also want countries to recognize and reward the grid flexibility resulting from the use of batteries while also addressing the risks associated with investing in energy storage and solar.
GSC is also urging countries to accelerate efforts aimed developing new technologies to deepen the usability of battery storage. For example, they emphasize the need for inverters focused on grid-scale use of battery storage systems. Such technologies will boost the flexibility and resilience of energy systems leveraging battery storage.
The association revealed that it had started the process of creating partnerships with different bodies uniting entities involved in mining, recycling, manufacturing and deploying battery storage products. Those bodies include FESSIA, Global Battery Alliance, IBESA, among others. GSC’s CEO Sonia Dunlop explains that these partnerships will enable the world body to engage with entities in the entire ecosystem of battery storage, to the benefit of all.
Dunlop adds that in the beginning, the solar industry and the battery industry were regarded as complementary industries. Over time, these two industries have merged and are now integrated since they all work to deliver locally generated power that is reliable. The GSC plans to play a leading role in cementing this integration since the old silos between the industries need to be broken down to advance the interests of both industries.
GSC published a report to coincide with its inauguration. In that report, the body says it will focus on the BESS market/battery storage solutions not exceeding 8-hours capacity. The report targets global leaders and aims at giving them detailed information about the status of the battery storage landscape so that they make informed decisions in their different jurisdictions.
It remains to be seen whether major players in the battery storage space, such as Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA), will play an active role in this new body or even join it since membership is voluntary.
