University of Chicago Receives Grant to Establish Chip Design Hub

The National Science Foundation in the U.S. has awarded UChicago a grant worth $3 million to accelerate progress in domestic semiconductor manufacturing and 3D chip design. This new hub will be led by UChicago’s Farah Fahim. The award is intended to address many of the challenges that have stood in the way of the semiconductor sector in the U.S., such as limited design ecosystems and disparate talent pipelines. With this grant, the ground will be laid to nurture next-generation semiconductor manufacturing domestically. Fahim explained that while innovation in chip design was strong within the country, this capability wasn’t sufficiently connected…

China Seems Lukewarm to the Resumption of Chip Exports from the US

In a recent move that surprised many analysts, President Trump allowed the resumption of exports of a particular AI chip that had been designed by an American firm for the Chinese market. The H2O chip had earlier on been included among the AI technologies that were restricted from being sold to firms in China. However, the resumption of these exports to China hasn’t triggered the response that the Western world expected. Prior to the announcement that exports would resume, China had made these particular restrictions a key feature of their demands in talks with the U.S. over easing trade tensions…

Apple Rejects Musk’s Claims of Bias Against its App Store

Apple has rejected the claims of bias against its app store by Elon Musk. Musk claimed that the store subverts fair competition and in response, Apple asserted that its app store is designed to be fair and free from bias. Musk, the owner of social media platform X, has threatened that he may resort to the courts of law to challenge Apple’s efforts to render it impossible for other apps to compete with those of OpenAI on the Apple App Store. AI is Rapidly Upending the Way Software Development is Done

More than a decade ago, software engineering emerged as a highly demanded line of work. For many people that didn’t have software engineering degrees, coding bootcamps offered a way to break into this industry. Graduates of these programs started out as entry-level coders and made their way up the ladder. However, the growth of AI has had a devastating effect on these bootcamps and their graduates. One such bootcamp graduate is Jonathan Kim, who now works at an ice cream shop in Los Angeles. He enrolled in a coding bootcamp and completed the program in 2024. With high hopes of…

AI, Extended Reality Successfully Tutor Surgical Trainees Without Supervisors

Researchers at Mount Sinai have demonstrated the possibility of training surgical students by leveraging an AI algorithm coupled with extended reality headsets. The 17 students in this study attained surgical success without a tutor being involved in their instruction. This novel research received highly positive reviews from the students who participated in the study and tested how well the deep learning model worked. The findings of this study have significant implications regarding the way surgeons and medical residents could be trained in future, in addition to opening more possibilities in the way autonomous learning can be undertaken within the medical…

Trump’s Executive Order Ends De Minimis Rule, Shaking up Global Ecommerce

Starting on August 29, the “de minimis” exemption which allowed parcels valued at less than $800 to enter the U.S. without being subjected to any import duties is going to come to an end. This change is aimed at addressing tariff evasion while also improving oversight on all imports. The rule change is going to reshape global ecommerce since many online platforms, especially Chinese ones like Temu and Shein, leveraged this de minimis exemption to penetrate the U.S. market with their cheaper products. Subjecting all imports to tariffs and other duties will increase the cost of those cheap imports and…

Despite Capex on AI Ballooning, Investors are Backing Big Tech All the Way

Investors are increasingly buying in on Big Tech’s skyrocketing expenditure on AI as technology firms release earnings reports that support such huge spends. This comes after artificial intelligence contributed significantly in propelling demand in internet search, cloud computing and digital advertising. Tech titans like Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon all reported increases in revenue, and these giants are among the tech firms spending the most to build out their AI infrastructure. Riding on the notion that this revenue growth will continue, these firms are significantly increasing their outlays on AI to address the capacity shortages which have held back their…
