Prices Are Beginning to Rise in the Power Semiconductor Market

The AI boom has created a massive market for semiconductor products like GPUs. As data centers have proliferated in order to address the compute needs of more advanced AI systems, power semiconductors are starting to become a center of focus, and many of the makers of these products are starting to increase their prices.

Power semiconductors are often sidelined when the media is talking about the AI boom partly because the manufacturing process of these components matured years ago.

However, as server racks have become more advanced and their capacity has grown, attention has shifted to the power semiconductors that make it possible for these server racks to do their work. Power semiconductors help in changing the power that comes from the grid into the form and magnitude that servers can use.

For example, power semiconductors can convert electricity from the AC type to the DC type, depending on what is required. They also reduce the current to the level that is needed. Electricity that reaches a socket at 110 watts, for example, often has to be converted to, say, 20 watts as it enters a specific component in an electronic device.

How well that power is converted to the low voltage required and how much of that power is lost as heat impact the efficiency of a data center. More heat created in this process means that more complex cooling systems have to be in place to quickly carry that heat away so that sensitive components can remain within the desired temperature range for their optimal performance and longevity.

As data centers have become more complex and server racks carry more GPUs to have high-compute capacity, attention has shifted towards power semiconductors and those that do an excellent job of ensuring power is available while minimizing the creation of heat are seeing their demand rise.

This increase in demand has put pressure on fabs to produce more of those components for the high-end market that requires them. Consequently, prices are inching up since fabs are reluctant to ramp up manufacturing capacity due to past experiences of boom-bust cycles that caused massive pain to manufacturers.

The AI boom started with a supply squeeze for advanced chips like GPUs when LLMs powering systems like ChatGPT proliferated in the market. That boom has been trickling down and has now reached power semiconductors. It remains to be seen whether the boom that turned firms like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE: TSM) into multi-trillion dollar companies by market cap will also create other trillion dollar companies among entities that manufacture the power semiconductors that are now experiencing surging demand.
