Samsung to Partner with Nvidia to Construct AI Megafactory

On Thursday, Samsung Electronics announced that it was partnering with Nvidia to set up a megafactory powered by AI that would accelerate semiconductor manufacturing it its operations in South Korea.

The company revealed that its new facility would be equipped with about 50,000 advanced GPUs from Nvidia so that all manufacturing processes at that plant have AI embedded in them. AI will be leveraged as Samsung designs and manufactures its new chips as it seeks to commercialize a new generation of its entire range of products that include robotics, mobile devices and home electronics.

This arrangement between Samsung and Nvidia differs from what the American tech giant has agreed with Oracle as well as with the Department of Energy in the U.S. Under those arrangements, the proposed AI factories are, in effect, data centers established to provide the huge amounts of computing infrastructure for purposes of training and running AI models.

For Samsung, the project entails constructing a manufacturing facility that relies on AI to make chips by automating the entire process. This automation will include critical steps like quality control, equipment operation and monitoring, as well as product design.

The AI systems will not only monitor but also analyze the production environments, make needed predictions and provide recommendations on matters like maintenance and optimization of all processes. The end-goal is to boost the yields in chip-making. The entire facility will be one intelligent network powered by AI.

The initiative will be undertaken over several years as Samsung integrates the advanced computing capabilities provided by Nvidia, and manufacturing at Samsung will be scaled up in tandem with the milestones completed during this integration. Key to this incorporation will be the concept of using “digital twins” in the chip-making process. These virtual replicas of advanced packing, logic, memory, manufacturing equipment and everything else at the megafactory will then be used to check everything prior to actual production.

In this way, any anomalies will be spotted early and corrective measures will also be tested prior to implementation. Once confirmed to be appropriate, tweaks will be made to the actual production activities and machinery. This automation will first be implemented in the production of semiconductors and then rolled out to other operations, such as the manufacturing of smartphones, televisions, kitchen appliances, and other products.

Samsung also plans on leveraging Nvidia’s technology to enhance its robotics products by utilizing real-world data. This advancement will enable the robots to have an enhanced ability to be aware of their surroundings and improve their decision-making in the field. Greater autonomy for robots will be attained, alongside improvements in the way robots work alongside humans in different settings.

Nvidia is rapidly spreading its influence in the technology ecosystem and its rivals like Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE: TSM) could also be undertaking their own efforts to deepen their market reach.
