SpaceX IPO Triggers Search for New Moniker for Leading Tech Firms

The Magnificent 7 has for long been used as a moniker on Wall Street to refer to the leading technology stocks on markets. However, questions are now arising on whether that moniker is still adequate given the several companies that have grown to trillion-dollar valuations, including SpaceX that last week had its IPO and rocketed to a valuation above $2 trillion.

The Magnificent 7 referred to U.S. tech giants, including Nvidia, Amazon, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Tesla and Meta. For many years, their dominance at the top was unshaken and their stocks kept climbing.

Recently, the leaderboard of tech stocks has received new members like Advanced Micro Devices, Micron Technology and Broadcom. Semiconductors have soared in demand and propelled these firms to valuation heights they hadn’t seen previously.

As a matter of fact, Broadcom and Micron are now members of the trillion dollar club, and the rise of these and other tech firms within the top tech stocks has prompted a rethink of the moniker used to refer to the leaders in the technology industry within the U.S.

Different monikers have come and gone over the years as the leading tech stocks changed, and Magnificent Seven is unlikely to remain in vogue for much longer.

In the 60s and 70s, Nifty 50 was popularized as a description of the top firms in the U.S. In the late 90s, Four Horsemen was the popular moniker amid market dominance by just four companies as the dotcom era was at its highest.

SpaceX’s entry to public trading has created a need to rethink the moniker that reflects the current times. This comes as other AI giants like Anthropic and OpenAI are racing to also go public and potentially leapfrog many leading firms from their positions in the ranking of most valuable firms by market capitalization.

Several monikers are already being floated to capture this new reality. “MANGOS” is one such contender for the next acronym for leading tech stocks. It covers Anthropic, Meta, Nvidia, OpenAI, Alphabet and SpaceX. Many analysts interpret the “A” as also representing Apple, which still remains a very valuable member of the tech leaderboard.

Another contender is “Magna Atoms,” a reference to the Mag 7 plus OpenAI, Anthropic and SpaceX. Bank of America came up with its version of the summary of leading tech companies in the U.S. They refer to those firms as the “AI Top 10,” capturing the original Magnificent 7 plus Advanced Micro Devices, Broadcom and Micron Technology.

As the excitement ramps up within markets regarding the skyrocketing valuations of various tech firms, one wonders what entities like Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) would think would be the best pick by analysts as the new go-to moniker for tech industry leaders.
