The US to Test New AI Models from Leading Firms for Safety

Three American tech companies, xAI, Google and Microsoft, have agreed to have any new AI models they develop safety-tested by the Department of Commerce. The tests will be conducted before those models become publicly accessible.

CAISI, or the Center for AI Standards & Innovation, is the Commerce Department’s agency that will conduct the safety tests. The agreement was reached after the signing of pacts building on initial agreements reached during Biden’s presidency. Under the terms of the latest agreements, the firms will submit their models so that their security and capabilities are assessed by the Commerce Department.

Chris Fall, CAISI’s director, said that conducting those tests helps to scale the public interest work that the center is doing during this critical time of rapid AI development.

Currently, the widely recognizable AI tool from Google is Gemini, which is largely available on the products of the company. Recently, the model started being used by military and defense agencies of the federal government. Microsoft is best known in the AI world for its CoPilot tool. xAI has Grok, a chatbot that gained notoriety after widespread reports that users were using it to generate naked images of people.

While writing about this agreement to have its future models subjected to tests by CAISI, Microsoft revealed that even if the firm conducts its own tests before a model is released, additional tests in which the company collaborates with the government were necessary to ensure national security and public safety.

It should be noted that the current administration under Trump has previously opted to stay away from regulating the AI and tech industry under the argument that onerous regulation and red tape could stand in the way of ensuring the U.S. leads the tech race.

However, the military is increasingly using AI, and news that Anthropic’s new model Mythos was so powerful that the firm was reluctant to release the model to the public may have caused the administration to modify its stance of letting tech firms innovate as they please. Trump administration officials even met Dario Amodei, the CEO of Anthropic, over concerns about that model.

The meeting’s necessity takes even greater significance given the ongoing lawsuit in which Anthropic is contesting the DOD’s decision to declare the firm a supply chain risk after it declined to disable its safeguards on Claude so that the military can use the technology in weapons targeting and for public surveillance.

As the race for AI dominance gains momentum within and outside the U.S., leading players in the industry around the world, such as Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (NYSE: TSM) will be keeping tabs on any developments on the regulatory front that could impact their operations.
