Trump Considers Imposing Controls on AI After Hacking Incidents

On Wednesday, President Trump revealed that his administration was weighing the possibility of imposing more controls over AI tools after models developed by OpenAI were involved in cybersecurity incidents.

The cybersecurity incidents he was referring to involved AI models from OpenAI “going rogue” and hacking into the systems of at least one company, Hugging Face. Trump said his administration was considering taking the lead on AI and also imposing controls on the technology.

This rhetoric marks a major shift for Trump, who has previously opted for a hands-off approach each time calls were made to regulate the AI industry.

However, even as he signaled that it was necessary to exercise some control over AI, he was quick to add that such control has to be exercised carefully so that the U.S. doesn’t hand AI dominance to China. He added that China didn’t exercise any control over the AI industry and was “free-wheeling.”

Last week, OpenAI took responsibility for its AI tools hacking another AI firm. The company says that the tools acted on their own, and that the two companies were collaborating to fix the problem. When asked, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, didn’t rule out the possibility that more companies had been hacked as well, so the full scale of the incident hasn’t been fully understood.

It should be noted that the Trump administration previously took the unprecedented step of ordering Anthropic to withdraw its advanced AI models that had been deemed too risky but were still released to the public.

That decision was rescinded shortly after, and the two models are now available to the public. The OpenAI cybersecurity glitches come hot on the heels of Anthropic’s experience with the administration, and these events appear to be reshaping how Washington views AI regulation.

In related news, the White House has accused Chinese firms of stealing technology from the U.S. Michael Kratsios, a senior technology advisor to Trump, said Moonshot AI’s Kimi K3 model was developed after the Chinese company stole Anthropic’s technology.

Beijing denies all these accusations and insists that Washington is politicizing trade and technology. Washington has gone as far as banning imports of advanced robots made outside the U.S., citing national security concerns. China is invariably the source of these advanced robots, and the country has vowed to respond to these actions taken by Washington.

AI hyperscalers like Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) will be concerned about Trump’s comments on AI regulation since such measures could create operational challenges for tech companies seeking to innovate rapidly and get an edge over their international competition.
