UN Geneva Conference Seeks Global Unity on AI Regulation

This week, the United Nations will host a global dialogue in Geneva in a bid to galvanize efforts aimed at coming up with globally agreeable ways to govern AI so that this new technology can serve the general good while any risks inherent in the technology are collectively managed.

At least 2,600 individuals, including tech executives, ministers, experts and academics will converge in the Swiss capital. Shortly after the conference that will last two days, tech firms will showcase their cutting-edge AI innovations in different fields like agriculture and health.

Those innovations illustrate why it is important to create global oversight systems to manage the risks of AI while ensuring that all communities benefit from these technologies.

Currently, AI development is concentrated in a few developed countries like China and the U.S. while poorer countries are lagging and have no choice but to consume what has been developed without their input or ability to tweak the technology in order to make it suitable for their local needs.

While announcing the upcoming meetings, Antonio Guterres, the Secretary-General of the UN, said that the conference confirms that there is a general concern about oversight given that so many countries are sending delegations to the event.

It is noteworthy that the U.S. has pulled back from participating in many UN-led efforts, but Guterres confirmed that Washington would be sending a team to this conference. This illustrates how important the planned discussions are, and Guterres hopes the conference will move the world toward a uniform way of approaching AI regulation.

Many people have criticized the slow pace at which the UN conducts its business, calling it “tortoise paced.” However, this approach could be exactly what the world needs at this time since a lot is changing rapidly in the technology field and rushing to make decisions creates room for oversights and mistakes.

A case in point is the EU. The bloc rushed to pass AI regulations and as the technology evolved, policymakers were compelled to backtrack on some of the provisions they had included in this law after realizing that the situation on the ground required a different approach.

One big test that the conference will be judged by is the extent to which countries from the Global South participate in the discussions since these countries are the most disadvantaged due to skills gaps and funding limitations on matters of AI development.

Recent events in the U.S., such as the order given to Anthropic to withdraw its Fable and Mythos AI models from circulation and then, shortly afterward, the ban was reversed have shown tech giants like Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) that an approach in which general regulations exist is a lot better than an approach in which rules are made on a case by case basis.
