University of Chicago Receives Grant to Establish Chip Design Hub

The National Science Foundation in the U.S. has awarded UChicago a grant worth $3 million to accelerate progress in domestic semiconductor manufacturing and 3D chip design. This new hub will be led by UChicago’s Farah Fahim.

The award is intended to address many of the challenges that have stood in the way of the semiconductor sector in the U.S., such as limited design ecosystems and disparate talent pipelines. With this grant, the ground will be laid to nurture next-generation semiconductor manufacturing domestically.

Fahim explained that while innovation in chip design was strong within the country, this capability wasn’t sufficiently connected to the manufacturing ecosystem domestically. The project will therefore seek to avail advanced manufacturing resources to academia in order to boost manufacturing efforts around the country.

This initiative is aimed at transforming the way vertically stacked chips are designed by leveraging latest approaches instead of sticking to the flat squares currently used on cellphones and laptops. The hub will be focused on driving this shift in addition to facilitating the growth of a community making use of these new design approaches. In this way, practical tools will be availed to link academia, industry and national labs throughout the country so that the entire ecosystem is supported to take chip development to the next level.

Currently, it is hard to access the needed design and manufacturing tools since the entities having them are few and far between, in addition to being disconnected from one another.

Under this project, it will be possible to provide design flows that can be accessed together with the needed tools depicting how this complicated process is executed. Fahim says this approach will equip the future workforce with the skills and experience needed to propel innovation throughout the semiconductor industry.

The current barriers that exist in the way undergrads, professors, post-docs and doctoral students approach chip design will be removed and everyone in the value chain, including manufacturers, will be linked to the entire process.

Key industry figures welcomed this initiative as something that has been long overdue. For example, Synopsys’ Katy Crist said the industry is rapidly evolving and the hub will help in ensuring that the U.S. retains its leadership in chip design and manufacturing by producing future employees who have top-notch skills.

For leading companies like Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) that specialize in providing the critical software used in the semiconductor industry, the design hub could provide the needed human resources needed to take their solutions to the next level and build on their current levels of success in the global semiconductor industry.
