On Tuesday, the Trump administration announced that it had imposed a ban on the importation of new humanoid robots made outside the U.S. The reason given for this action was to avert national security risks that were unacceptable.
The ban covers advanced robots, such as four-legged equipment and humanoid robots. These products are largely made in China, a country that has been engaged in a fierce race with the United States for global AI and technology dominance.
The FCC (Federal Communications Commission) also imposed a ban on imports of power inverters, devices largely used in solar energy systems and in data centers. The FCC said those products posed risks to the American economy.
Brendan Carr, the chairman of the FCC, said the federal agency was doing its work to secure supply chains that were considered critical by the U.S. The FCC updated its Covered List, a register that documents different services and goods deemed to pose national security risks to the U.S., to include power inverters and advanced robots.
The FCC clarified that this ban didn’t affect robots and inverters that had previously been cleared to enter the country. Only new models of these products are banned from entry into the country. The agency says these advanced products could be a channel through which the U.S. becomes vulnerable to cyberattacks, data theft, remote access, surveillance or other illicit actions by foreign governments and entities.
In response to these developments, the Chinese embassy in the U.S. said that for a long time, Beijing opposed the use of “groundless pretexts” by the United States to impose sanctions and politicize trade-related issues.
The embassy added that China would respond to any action taken against its legitimate interests and that no available option would be ruled out in this regard. It urged the United States to put a halt to its smear campaign targeting Chinese firms and desist from threatening to impose sanctions against those companies.
These latest import bans follow several other bans or restrictions that have been imposed on products made in China. For example, Chinese electric vehicles now dominate many major economies around the world, but Washington imposed prohibitive tariffs that have effectively locked these EVs out of the U.S. market.
This latest spat between the two largest economies raises concerns that Beijing could also retaliate the way it did when the U.S. banned advanced semiconductor exports to China. China’s response was to restrict exports of rare earth elements, inputs that are critical to various advanced manufacturing activities, such as electronics production and aerospace applications.
Major technology companies like Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) will be hoping that the two largest economies in the world resolve their differences so that trade can continue seamlessly across those markets.
