Vatican Convenes Conference to Discuss AI Use in Healthcare

The Vatican hosted a conference at the start of this week with the aim of discussing the role of AI in medicine. It was attended by philosophers, medical professionals and theologians. The event covered three days, from November 10-12.

Speaking to the press after the conference, Msgr. R. Pegoraro revealed that the gathering brought together participants from diverse parts of the globe, including Europe, the U.S., India and Latin America. These people helped to shed needed light on the challenges and experiences of different people around the world on the matter of how AI was affecting the delivery of healthcare.

Pegoraro drew attention to the dangers linked to transforming illness and health into numerical data. He pointed out that doing so ignores the fact that the lived experience of humans had a complex mix of fears, feelings and emotions. He added that the church had a role to play in ensuring new technologies are non-discriminatory, transparent and without bias. This is far better than simply labeling these technologies as bad or good.

Doctor Otmar Kloiber, the World Medical Association’s Secretary General, acknowledged that AI is rapidly making inroads into the medical field. He enumerated some of its benefits that include accelerating therapy and diagnosis, advancing precision medicine, and personalizing treatment.

He also pointed out some pitfalls associated with AI in medicine, such as reducing human interactions between healthcare professionals and their patients, potentially worsening inequalities due to advanced AI-driven treatments only being accessible to wealthier individuals and also amplifying privacy concerns as patient data is exposed to the systems underlying the tools being used.

Another conference participant, Prof. Theresa Lysaught, was concerned about the potential conflicts that could arise as technology is “humanized” while also attempting to “mechanize” human beings. She said careful thought has to go into navigating these dynamics so that a workable balance is achieved between these two tensions.

Lysaught described AI in medicine as fascinating, akin to Star Trek, and revealed that the contributions made during the conference by participants from different places like Catalonia and India showed how helpful the technology can be to professionals in the field engaged in the delivery of medical services. AI has the power to transform healthcare delivery, she added.

As tech titans like Meta Platforms Inc. (NASDAQ: META) continue their efforts to expand AI infrastructure and come up with different innovations in the field, these novel technologies are bound to have a profound effect in not just healthcare but other sectors as well.
