Xiaomi CEO: Humanoid Robots will Do Most Factory Work in 5 Years

The CEO OF Xiaomi, Lei Jun, has predicted that humanoid robots are set to run smart factories within the coming five years. He affirmed that this shift will be enabled by artificial intelligence and it will happen rapidly rather than gradually.

His comments come at a time when China is pushing to have the manufacturing systems in the country modernized and made smarter.

The Chinese automaker’s CEO gave the example of the company he heads as an illustration of the changes that are coming to all factory floors. Xiaomi has installed an AI-vision-powered X-ray system to inspect electric car parts that are die-cast. The new system completes the needed inspection in just two seconds yet the same process would take humans a lot longer (up to ten times more time). The automated system also reduces errors, so there are immediate benefits to reverting to the automated system.

Lei said that such automation shows the potential in the robotics market and added that many companies will be required to address this huge market since no single firm has the capacity to serve this large market alone.

Lei revealed that Xiaomi plans to debut humanoid robots throughout the company’s production lines in the coming five years. Once installed, the robots are expected to undertake most of the tasks currently being done by humans, particular precision-intensive tasks and repetitive ones. Automation is best suited to such tasks, he added.

The CEO says that factory automation leveraging humanoid robots will form the first step of the proliferation of these robots. There will be an even larger market for humanoid robots designed for use in households as these tools are improved to equip them with the advanced capabilities needed to enable them navigate the complexities common in people’s homes.

Xiaomi is no stranger to the humanoid robotics space. Back in 2022, it presented CyberOne, a humanoid robot, during a tech demonstration. The company sees these robots as a vital part of their product line in the years to come.

The company CEO says humanoid robots present many obvious benefits, such as expediting production cycles and bringing stability to supply operations. Costs also reduce when operations are conducted by robots, which increases competitiveness. As humanoid robots take on more tasks, humans will be free to focus on core functions of product design, planning and making technical decisions.

With companies like Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) also focusing on commercializing humanoid robots, the world is on the precipice of an industrial revolution that will hinge on AI-powered factory automation and robotics in manufacturing.
