3 Takeaways from the Recent Earnings Reports of Tech Giants

Over the past several days, many tech companies have released their earnings reports. These included Amazon, Apple, Meta, Google and Microsoft. One common factor in the earnings reports was that the firms intended to keep injecting huge sums of money into their AI plans. We discuss the key takeaways that those earnings reports brought to light.

First, it was clear from those earnings reports that AI chatbots and tools aren’t making much money. Instead, the firms are spending a lot more on their AI plans than the money that is being made from the AI technology of those companies.

For example, Meta, which owns Meta AI, saw the company’s free cash flow dwindle to $784 million despite the company recording total revenue of $61 billion in the recent quarter. Free cash flow is the money left over after a company has met its investment and operational costs. For Meta, that number has shrunk because of the huge amounts of money going into AI investment.

Another major takeaway from the earnings reports of the tech giants is that investors are becoming impatient and want to see actual results rather than being sold ideas about what AI promises to do in future.

The way investors responded to Meta’s plans to create an AI agent shows that investors are increasingly losing interest in ideas and now prefer results. Meta shares plunged after the company released its earnings reports, not because the firm made losses, but because investors weren’t impressed by the vague promises that AI investment will pay off.

Investors’ reaction to Microsoft’s earnings reports underscores this very premise. Microsoft shares soared to a 6-month high after the firm’s earnings reports revealed that the main AI tool of the company had seen increased adoption and the firm’s revenue grew as a result. This demonstrated that the AI of the company had started bringing in increasing amounts of money, and investors were happy with that.

The third takeaway from the earnings reports is that demand for new technology remains high. Apple revealed that its AI-enhanced products were being bought a lot faster than the company had expected, and the firm went as far as saying sales could slow down because it was getting harder to access the microchips the company needs to manufacture iPads, iPhones and Mac computers quickly enough to address the demand for those products.

Similarly, Google revealed that monthly users of its AI chatbot Gemini had tripled to 950 million in just one year. This illustrates the huge appetite for new technology. It remains to be seen how Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG), the parent company of Google, will capitalize on this growing user base to generate ongoing revenue that justifies the exploding capital expenditure being allocated to AI projects.
