As countries move to ramp up their transition to renewable energy from sources like solar and wind, it has become increasingly clear that energy storage systems are critical to the success and economic viability of this shift. Energy storage systems are vital to the shift to renewable energy because they address the intermittency challenge.
Renewable sources of energy, like solar and wind, don’t work round the clock. At night, the sun doesn’t shine and yet that is often when energy demand peaks. Similarly, not all days or hours of the day are sufficiently windy to generate energy, and that means energy generation will be uneven.
This intermittency requires adequate emphasis to be placed on energy storage so that any excess energy generated when power demand is low can be stored for use when generation is low yet electricity demand has peaked.
Otherwise, utilities could be compelled to curtail excess renewable energy when generation is high but electricity demand is low. Curtailment wastes available energy and makes renewable energy projects inefficient.
To address this challenge, utilities are ramping up their establishment of energy storage infrastructure. For example, in the United States, battery storage has grown from less than 2 gigawatts in 2020 to almost 30 gigawatts in early 2025. Many projects are planned or are being undertaken to increase battery storage facilities to absorb excess renewable energy and release it during peak demand.
While progress is being made to ramp up energy storage, the IEA provides a sobering warning that a 35-fold increase is required so that available storage amounts to at least 970 gigawatts by 2030 if the growing energy needs are to be met. Currently, energy storage stands at approximately 28 gigawatts, showing how much of the remaining gap must be closed.
Massive amounts of investment capital need to be directed at establishing battery storage systems on a utility scale, but policy hurdles could prevent this aspiration from becoming a reality. In the U.S., the Trump administration has consistently been hostile to renewable energy and has gone as far as paying firms to discontinue ongoing construction projects while also canceling funding to many renewable energy projects that had been approved by the previous administration.
In such an environment with policies that are unsupportive, energy storage growth will largely depend on the efforts of firms like Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) that are willing to put massive amounts of money on the line to ensure that their vision of widespread renewable energy adoption sees the light of day.
