AI, Extended Reality Successfully Tutor Surgical Trainees Without Supervisors

Researchers at Mount Sinai have demonstrated the possibility of training surgical students by leveraging an AI algorithm coupled with extended reality headsets. The 17 students in this study attained surgical success without a tutor being involved in their instruction.

This novel research received highly positive reviews from the students who participated in the study and tested how well the deep learning model worked. The findings of this study have significant implications regarding the way surgeons and medical residents could be trained in future, in addition to opening more possibilities in the way autonomous learning can be undertaken within the medical field.

Traditionally, surgical training requires that a proctor is present to train surgical students within a surgical room setting. However, this approach usually results in the acquisition of the skills being inconsistent.

Doctor Nelson Stone, the study’s corresponding author, says the team conducted their study to explore other ways through which surgical training could be conducted effectively and at a lower cost. Stone adds that the team leveraged a deep learning model that they combined with extended reality headsets that were worn by study participants to receive instructions during the virtual procedure.

The surgery was geared at removing cancerous tissues during partial nephrectomy operations that included clamping the renal artery. As the learners practiced, the first-person camera on the system continuously observed what they did and gave them feedback in real time. It projected corrective prompts geared at assessing how well they were attaining the needed skills.

Doctor Stone says their study showed that a simulated model could successfully be used to teach surgical trainees in the absence of a trainer or supervisor. This approach could free physicians from having to spend lots of time training their surgical students in different surgical procedures. The approach could also be useful for training practitioners on how to use new techniques and devices while they are in the field.

The researchers plan to build on their findings to develop new models utilizing synthetic cadavers so that the training is more comprehensive and covers an entire procedure instead of focusing on only one component of the procedure.

The study team believes that their findings could go a long way towards improving surgical outcomes as students receive more intensive training that leverages AI models in ways that save patients from the risk of mistakes made as trainees are given hands-on training in the operating room. The next generation of surgeons is also likely to possess top-notch skills as a result of this type of training.

The success of this study shows the transformative potential of AI in not just the medical field but in other industries, such as the one where companies like Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) are involved in using AI to revolutionize online search and advertising.
