Report Finds That Data Centers Could Drive Increased Utility Firm Spending

A new report released by PowerLines, a consumer education nonprofit, revealed that utility firms in the U.S. plan to inject up to $1.4 trillion within the coming five years into programs geared at upgrading aging power grids. This spending spree is being motivated by the growing pressure to provide electricity to the data centers that are mushrooming around the country.

PowerLines arrived at that total capital outlay after analyzing the plans of 51 publicly traded utilities. The vast majority of those firms indicated that data centers were the driving force behind their capex plans over the coming five fiscal years. The companies singling out AI data centers serve approximately 250 million customers in the United States. Earnings reports were a key source of information about the plans of the utilities.

According to estimates, data centers consumed at least 4% of all the electricity generated in the U.S. in 2025. By 2030, this fraction could grow to 9%.

The report released by PowerLines indicates that utilities justified increased capital expenditure as necessary to replace aging infrastructure and strengthen grids’ resilience against extreme weather events. The total capex planned for the coming half decade marks a 20% increase from what had previously been projected in 2025.

This increased capex could have impacts on the utility bills of households since most costs incurred by utilities tend to be passed on by way of hikes to the bills consumers pay for electricity. The growing backlash against data centers around the country is partly due to these increases in power bills for ordinary consumers. Consumers are unhappy that they are footing the cost of providing electricity to Big Tech.

With the average electricity bills of households projected to increase by 5.1% in 2026, it isn’t surprising that communities are fighting back. In case these forecast increases materialize and increase over time, consumers could find themselves footing more than half a trillion dollars of the projected capex that utilities plan to inject into grid upgrades.

However, it doesn’t have to play out like this. Tech companies and developers of data center projects can contribute to grid expansion and improvement by financing utilities in target jurisdictions or even opting for onsite energy generation at data centers. Either option would reduce the resistance against data center construction projects and the onus is on tech giants like Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOGL) (NASDAQ: GOOG) to analyze local conditions and come up with innovative solutions that communities will see as not only fair but beneficial to all parties.
