China is currently working to wean itself of dependence on AI software and hardware from the U.S. and its allies. Recent indications suggest that the country has reached a turning point as its leading tech firms report notable achievements.
Cambricon Technologies released its earnings report showing outstanding fiscal performance. Alibaba Group is reportedly testing new artificial intelligence hardware. DeepSeek is also said to be using homegrown solutions to train some of its AI models. China’s lukewarm response to the resumption of sales of Nvidia chips designed for the Chinese market suggests that local companies may have domestically-produced alternatives that can do the job.
Such developments suggest that a major shift is taking place, to the pleasure of the government in Beijing which has been calling for self-sufficiency in the semiconductor industry. As more local companies opt for domestically-made AI hardware and software, the providers of these products will have the impetus to ramp up their operations to meet the growing demand, and this will in turn reduce the need to source solutions from abroad.
Several factors are helping to push this transition, according to Rui Ma, a tech analyst. He points out sanctions, supportive local policies and market forces as the key drivers of this transition happening in China.
He adds that market forces are playing the biggest role in this switch since the local demand is making it possible for Chinese firms to exercise one of their key attributes; their ability to compete. The different firms, such as publicly-traded Cambricon, MetaX and Enflame are engaged in a stiff competition for market share, and this competition is bound to propel Chinese tech to new highs.
However, the picture isn’t all perfect. Chinese firms have to contend with supply chain uncertainties. They aren’t ready to ramp up their production to meet the growing demand, and, as Huawei admitted, Chinese companies are still a generation behind their U.S. rivals. These aren’t easy issues to overcome, and the coming years will reveal how well local firms adapt to the constraints they currently face.
At the moment, there are talks between Beijing and Washington to resolve their trade war. It is highly likely that Beijing is putting access to top-notch American tech at the core of its demands in any deal to be agreed. However, Washington regards its technology as a trump card and is unlikely to give access to its competitor since China would get the tools it needs to support its race for global technological dominance.
The huge test that Chinese tech will face is how it responds once tech export restrictions are lifted by the U.S. Will Chinese firms swarm to get their hands on American tech products or will they have homegrown solutions that are equal to or better than the offerings of U.S.-based tech giants like Nvidia Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA)?
