On Tuesday, ChatGPT maker OpenAI unveiled an AI-powered browser to mount a challenge against other existing web browsers, such as Chrome that is owned by Google. Dubbed ChatGPT Atlas, the new web browser from OpenAI comes with a number of features that the developers hope will give them an edge on the market.
Atlas doesn’t feature a search bar as is common in web browsers. OpenAI says this browser was designed around ChatGPT and will therefore operate within the chatbot. Atlas was unveiled on MacOS, Apple’s operating system.
The new browser has been unveiled at a time when OpenAI is looking for ways to generate revenue (monetize) its AI technology and leverage the growing number of users on its chatbot. During the unveiling ceremony, the company revealed that it planned to provide an agent capable of performing web searches on its own on behalf of users. This agent would only be available to users of ChatGPT that have paid for the service.
OpenAI has also taken a variety of measures geared toward driving more ChatGPT users to the services offered by the company. For example, OpenAI has signed partnerships with e-commerce platforms like Shopify and Etsy. It also has partnerships with booking service providers, such as Booking.com and Expedia.
Early this month, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, revealed that ChatGPT has recorded 800 million active users a week, marking a 100% increase from the 400 million recorded in February. It is this growing base of users that the company is looking to monetize.
However, not everyone is as optimistic about the prospects of Atlas on the market. Moor Insights and Strategy’s lead analyst Pat Moorhead says Atlas is unlikely to mount a notable challenge against existing market leaders like Chrome and Microsoft Edge. This is because the existing users of those browsers are more likely to wait for their preferred browsers to upgrade their current features to incorporate those being touted by Atlas.
The launch of Atlas comes approximately 12 months after a court ruled that Google was operating a de facto monopoly for online search. However, the court refrained from ordering the company to divest its Chrome browser as the DOJ had wanted.
As the battle to dominate online search continues, all eyes will be on firms like Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) to see what innovations they come up with to get an edge on the market.
